On a grassy hill in the midst of farmland in Pathum Thani province, a monumental residence has risen, the home of the man who owns Lotus Eme, a contracting firm specialising in electrical, mechanical and construction engineering.

In designing the Lotus Residence, the owner had memories of a far smaller structure in his mind – the small home his father built for their family in Talay Noi, Phattalung, in a landscape of lotus ponds and water buffalo.

While the two buildings differ greatly in scale, they share the same kind of beautiful, inspiring surroundings. The engineer-owner and his childhood friend, who’s now an architect, built the Lotus Residence in harmonious partnership, adeptly combining the science of engineering and the arts of architecture and landscape architecture.

From afar, the house appears to resemble an island rising from a huge lotus lake – the origin of the town’s name, Talay Noi – and invokes memories of the owner’s boyhood hometown.

The grand interior reinterprets local arts and crafts. Deep inside is a courtyard where a concrete pond containing krajood (sedge) is encircled within a metal ring. It’s a relaxed, peaceful setting. This pond, representing memories of nature and the way of life found in Talay Noi, is like the starting point on a path back to simpler times and serenity. And the layers of the house symbolise the components of a lotus pond – from the nurturing muddy earth to the blossoming lotus flowers on the surface.

This is truly a lotus land on which memories are engraved.
